Mumbai was once an archipelago of 7 islands

During the British empire in India, Mumbai was an archipelago i.e. group of islands, 7 to be exact that comprised of Isle of Bombay, Mahim, Mazagaon, Colaba, Old Woman’s Island (Little Colaba), Parel and Worli. It took almost 60 years to unite Bombay into a single land mass. Shocking right?

Bombay was renamed to Mumbai, but why?

Now you might know that Bombay was renamed to Mumbai, but we bet that you don’t know the reason behind it right? Before British, Mumbai fell in the hands of Portuguese who saw the city as a natural water bay and named it “Bom Bhaia”. Later on, when Princess Braganza was married off to Charles II of England, Bombay was given as a dowry to England. The name Bombay was changed to Mumbai officially in 1995 when Shiv Sena decided to end the legacy of British colonialism and pay tribute to the local goddess Mumbadevi.

Mumbai has the best food suppliers in the world

Dabbawallas, a century-old food delivery system are the best food suppliers in the world. Riding on the bicycles, these Dabbawallas carry and drop food from their client to the customer without efficiently. Roughly around 200,000 Dabbas (Tiffins) are delivered daily by 5,000 Dabbawallas! Amazing right? No, there is more. Interestingly, every Dabbawala is an owner and earns an equal share in the profit! They are famous to the extent that their business model is studied by MBA students at Harvard as a case study.

The first ever five-star hotel in India was built in Mumbai
